When a case of self-harm is being evaluated there is evidence of physical and mental abuse. They are asked about their past because growing up being abused by either parents, relatives, or friends they tend to want to hurt themselves. There are parents or caretakers that scar their children far past the obvious bruises and scars. In the word of Doctor of Philosophy Joan Kaufman, “Maltreated children are at high risk for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, suicidality, and a host of other mental health and medical health problems.” (Kaufman, pg.6) For a child to be at a higher risk of so many serious problems are truly sad. When a child that is being physically or verbally abused they tent to try and hurt themselves like trying to commit suicide, or they start becoming depressed and anti-social. Every child deserves to be in the best of spirits and have the most out of there child hood. When thinking of a child that commits suicide and then find out that it was all due to someone that has been abusing of them, it makes everybody wonder why nothing was ever detected and stopped before such a tragedy. Emotional abuse is far most the worst because it carries long into them being adults. As a parent there should never be a moment when there is any type of abuse. When a child is dealing with emotions because they do not know how to deal with them and the abuser is taking advantage of that and making them feel bad about themselves. It is sad to think that kids rather be out and away from what should be a safe haven and home because they are being spoken to in disrespect or in a bad manner. According to a Panel in Research on Child Abuse and Neglect, “Some experts now contend that the psychological or emotional components of abuse and neglect are the factor most responsible for the destructive consequences of all types of maltreatment” (Brassard et al., 1987; Erickson and Egeland, in press; Newberger, 1973). Children should always have a safe place to be when they are home, but when being emotionally abused is the case the child is veered over to a destructive path. Being emotionally neglected is going to affect the adult hood of a child because when growing up as a child and treated a certain way they start having different feelings and beliefs that affects their adult thoughts and beliefs.
