Academic Integrity is something that is required of any student at any given institution. Integrity itself requires respect for certain values that are essential to an institution and it is grounded on a concept of honesty and respect for the work of others and yourself, Plagiarism, citing your sources, and the copyright law all tie into the concept of academic integrity.
Plagiarism is when one takes the words, ideas, or thoughts of someone else and tries to make it their own original work. This is a very dishonorable thing to do at any school as a student. Taking the ideas of someone else and trying to morph them into your own shows your lack of creativity as a student. It also shows that one lacks respect for someone else’s creation or work. This is a very serious thing that can lead to a destroyed reputation as a student and even legal repercussions such as lawsuits, deemed criminal offenses and even possible jail time. For example, in 2013, singer Robin Thicke was sued by the family of late artist, Marvin Gaye, for the alleged infringement of some of his classic songs without consent of the family for his summer 2013 hit song, “Blurred Lines”. This shows that one must always be careful when creating an art of work in order to avoid conflict.

It prevents the illegal copying of a work of an author and protects it from being stolen or used without their knowledge. It is great protection from those who use and take peoples work from online and attempts to make it their own. One can still use the ideas from within a piece of work and still be honoring this law by not turning it into their own.
