The Effect of Acid Rain on Types of Building Materials

The Board of Directors at the zoo want have statues in front of all the animals displaying what is in the exhibit. The zoo wants to have a scientist do a lab to find out which building material can last the longest with acid rain. A tremendous amount of structures are being caused damage from Acid Rain. Almost 1 million dollars are spent on cleanup and renovations of buildings because of the acid rain in connecticut. The acid rain in connecticut is about a 4.4 PH level. The natural level for PH is 7 the most acidic it can be is 0 and the most basic it can be is 14. Than it should be able to tell which material is the best depending on which material changes the PH of the acid (vinegar)

One example could be that the amount of rocks were different from each other. That could have been changed by having a scale and getting the correct amount of each material. That makes the experiment invalid because there are more rocks in certain container, which could affect the pH more. Another invalidity is that there is not a perfect match to the 50 ml of vinegar. Using a graduated cylinder is up to the human eye to predict what amount there is. That could have been fixed by having a full measuring cup of 50 ml and filling it to the top. Another validity is the pH paper. Yet again the human eye can not tell which color is close. That leads to a guess which can not be valid. Another way to help that mistake is get a electrical reader and then stick it in the vinegar to get an exact measurement of the pH. That could have messed up the experiment because the pH level is not valid. Although the experiment had many invalidities there are validities to. One example is the fact that there was the same amount of time and vinegar for each trial. Another is that there were multiple trials with such constants. A suggestion for an extension for the experiment would be to have the trials sit overnight and have a scale to measure the rock
