Why would they do that? Is there something making them act abnormal? These are the questions that pscologists ask when trying to determine an abnormality and its treatment. There are now two main theories as to what causes abnormalities, the somatogenic theory and psychogenic theory.The somatogenic theory states that abnormailities are caused by a biological illness or disorder, something that you are born with. So the seemingly insane student running around like a maniac, yelling nonsense could be explained by that she or he “has damage to the bottom part of the front of the brain, which makes people do things that are socially inappropriate.” (http://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-abnormal-psychology-definition-and-common-disorders-studied.html) So to summarize, the somatogenic theory suggests that abnormailities are things we are born with and not things we develop. The second theory is known as the psychogenic. It proposes that abnormailities are formed due to psychological problems. Sigmund Freud might suggest that the dean that is yelling nonsense has an underdeveloped superego. The three main aspects are said to be behavioral, medical, and cognitive. The behavioral aspect is the behaviors or actions caused by the abnormality. In behavioral therapy, positive behavior is augmented. Although this method might work to help the patient, I do not think it is most effective due to the fact that it attempts to alter the behavior caused by the abnormality and does not try to change the stem of the abnormailty. The medical aspect is how the health professionals look at and attempt to treat it from a medical standpoint. This prespective focuses on the importance of deternining the underlying cause of the abnormailty. Some of the underlying causes can be “genetic inheritance, related physical disorders, infections and chemical imbalances.”
