Adam Goodes is called an Ape On the 13th of May 2013, the Sydney Swans AFL player Adam Goodes was referred to as an ‘ape’ by a 13-year-old Collingwood supporter during the first match of the Indigenous round (Digital Classroom, 2023). This event remains significant in history as it reflects upon the inequitable aspects of today’s society. Goodes’ case reinforces the validity of the quote; “Sports are the microcosm of society” (Billie Jean King) as it gives insight on the diversity, appreciation and respect that fails to exist in Australian society. Victoria State Government conducted a survey in 2011 (two years before the event occurred) which questioned Victorians if they have experienced any form of racism. Despite the fact that her discriminatory behaviour towards Goodes was strongly disrespectful and audacious, if the community she was surrounded with was more considerate of integrating diversity, it is likely that she would have had more respect towards the athlete.
