A wise man once said, “ Adaptation is a profound process. It means you figure out how to thrive in the world.” Learning to adapt to the hard challenges is the way you learn to succeed in the world, as this quote states. Buck the main character in The Call of the Wild by Jack London has to learn to adapt physically and mentally to the new environment.
Buck who lived in sunny California had a perfect life compared to any other dog. He was his master Judge Miller’s loyal companion. Buck was king at Judge’s place, he ruled over every living creature, and it was hard for him to learn otherwise. Until his life takes a spin and he becomes an Alaskan sled dog for the Gold Rush. He was unfamiliar with the conditions unlike the other dogs who were raised and born to be a sled dog. The author pointed out on page 17, “ Francois fastened upon him all arrangement of straps and buckles. It was a harness, such as he had seen, the groom’s put on the horses at home.” Buck had never seen sled straps for dogs from where he was from. Later on that night Buck tried to go into the mushers tent, to learn that it was not a place that he was allowed. He didn’t know where the other dogs had disappeared to either. Buck then learns another lesson that he was to sleep under the snow. This is where all his teammates had disappeared to. In addition, Buck gains and loses new owners throughout the book, adapting to their personalities, behavioral exceptions, and more was hard. Buck had good owners who feed him well and let him rest when it got to point of exhaustion like John Thornton. Buck also gained owners like Mercedes, Hal, and Charles who were cruel and abusive to the dogs. Buck continued to adapt to the new environment.
Buck changes throughout the story and turns from a tamed dog to a wild dog. At the end of the book Buck decides to join the wilderness. He follows a moose heard until he kills a stronger male moose. Buck killed many things as a wild dog fighting to survive. He then knew he was strong and could survive on his own. Later a wolf pack comes into his territory he starts off by
