In 2013 Adelaide Oval underwent an expensive and extensive $535 million redevelopment. In less than a year of operation more than a million people have been through the gates.

For the purposes of this investigation the redevelopments of Adelaide Oval are classified as a “success” if:

1) the redevelopment accomplished what it set out to accomplish and,

2) the redevelopment fulfilled the expectations of the people of Adelaide.

Through extensive internet-based research as well as surveys and interviews, I have been able to develop a sound argument, which illustrates that the redevelopment of Adelaide Oval has been an overall success.

What did the redevelopment set out to accomplish?

Adelaide Oval has been the hosting ground for both cricket and football at the highest level since colonial times. On the 31st of May 1871 the South Australian Cricket Association was formed when twelve acres were leased from the Adelaide City Council for ‘cricketing purposes’. The first football match, however, was played there on the 18th of August 1877. The first grandstand was erected in 1882 and remained in place until the year 2009. Adelaide Oval became a venue for many large events other than sporting, for example the first rock concert in 1977 when Fleetwood Mac played followed by such stars as David Bowie, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Michael Jackson and Elton John.
