Adichie states, ““We teach our girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller. We say to girls, you can have ambition, but not too much.” Adichie’s use of pathos symbolizes the many prospects against women, specifically young girls as they experience sadness as they are excluded from the full opportunities and liberties as young men. She conveys that there are so many inequalities between the genders is due to way parents raise their children, specifically their daughters. If equality is to be obtained, changing the way in which children are brought up must be done first. Adichie also addresses that aspect of gender itself sets individuals up for the way in which they should pursue their life. Adichie claims, “The problem with gender is that is how we should be rather than how we are.” Adichie use of pathos as well as she appeals the similar of pressure and insuffiency among both men and women due to environmental expectations. She communicates to both men and women how much gender “rules” can define an individual. That in itself is a problem However, every human being living amongst this Earth is unique and has the ability to change this issue. This can lead to a better, freer, and happier
