Adversity is something that everyone faces at one point in their life whether it is societal, physical, financial, or psychological. Everyone that faces adversity has two choices: They can acquiesce and give into egotism and despair, or they could persevere and find talent in themselves that they would have never seen otherwise. In some situations, adversity can cause a person to lose their values; however, in most situations, it draws out a person’s strengths. Hardship can bring out the worst in some people. An excellent example of this would be the main character in Toni Morrison’s novel, The Bluest Eye, Pecola Breedlove. If there was a single story that proved that amazing things can come from those who go through life’s worst challenges, it would be that of Jamie Tworkowski’s. Tworkowski has battled with depression for most of his life. Although he abhors his depression, he understands that it has taught him many things about himself and mankind. He has learned that people cannot make it through life on their own. His depression has helped him discover that he can be confident in his writing because he knows that there are others in his situation and that he is capable of showing immense kindness. He is using what his depression is teaching him to help others in his situation. Tworkowski founded the nonprofit organization called, To Write Love On Her Arms, or TWLOHA for short. This organization has helped thousands of people fight through depression. His depression has not been advertised as a good thing, but his journey has brought out confidence and compassion that he would have never known he
