What are civil rights? Civil rights are the rights of citizens to political and social freedom and equality. All people of all races are given these rights in America. But, African Americans were not given these rights, even though they were living in America. The African Americans were unhappy by this and things started to change. The changes that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s in goals, strategies, and the support of African American civil rights through many events. Some of these events are the March on Washington, nonviolent protests, and growing support of the African American movement. The goals of the African American Civil Rights Movement was to end segregation and to give African Americans the right to vote. The March on Washington …show more content…
Some of these events were the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Little Rock Nine, and the March to Montgomery. The bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama started one day when Rosa Parks sat in front of the bus and refused to move to the back of the bus. She was then arrested for not giving up her seat to a white man. This started a boycott of public transportations. On buses and trains the people should be allowed to sit anywhere. The event of Little Rock Nine was when nine African children volunteered to be integrated in Little Rock Central High School. The NAACP made sure that the kids made it to school safely, but one child Elizabeth Eckford walked by herself because she did not have any way to communicate with them. This event showed the whites that they were ready to do anything to get the rights they deserved. John F. Kennedy, talks about how the black people were born here and therefore should be allowed to vote and have all the rights as the white citizens (Doc C). Finally, the March to Montgomery was a march that started in Selma, Alabama.
