Since the time of the slave trade and the “birth of this nation” there has been a Muslim population in the United States. The Muslim religion was brought into the United States when the African slaves were brought into America. Because of the African slaves staying in the United States and reproducing in America, African-Americans have been a big population in the Muslim community since the beginning of Islam religion. Africa is known to be one of the first countries that Islam spread to after it’s origin home, the Arabian Peninsula. Despite Africans and African-Americans being a huge population of Muslims, especially Africa and North America, they have been overlooked by millions. The reason for this is because of the African-American population mainly following the teachings of these branches of Islam. The Nation of Islam is one of the most known sects of Islam upon the African-American/Black community in the United States. The `Nation of Islam' (NOI) sect began in 1930 amongst unemployed, poor African-Americans of Detroit, Michigan, reeling from the Great Depression. Its preachers denounced whites as grafted, inherently evil devils who might shortly be incinerated by God for their acts of oppression against Black humanity (Walker 369). NOI was started by an African-American man and focused more on the injustices against people of color and how to fight against them whilst maintaining your teachings. Even though NOI is the most known African-American branch of Islam, it is not the only one and some have very different views than the NOI.
