Paul Lauren Dunbar was born in 1872. He was an author of numerous collection of prose and poetry. He was one of the first African-American poets to gain national recognition. Dunbar wrote this poem in 1896. This poem is about the physical and emotional injustice of African slaves in America. The poem is about how we cover out actual feelings in order to not showing people our sadness and pain, and because we scare that they will deny us or look down upon us. I will explain the metaphor, and talk about the theme, and overall message.
On the other hand, the metaphor is extended to report how hard it was for many Americans in the 19th century to curb their feelings and problems in order to fit in with American society.The theme of the poem
