We find in Matthew 4:10 a weary Jesus, being tempted by Satan after Jesus fasted in the desert for forty days and forty nights. Satan, in verses eight and nine, offered concessions to Jesus in his weakened state with the expectation that Jesus’ flesh would get the best of him and cause him to yield to the offerings made buy the devil. Jesus rebuked Satan and said to him in verse ten these words, “Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shall you serve.” Satan understood that worship was important to God, so much so, that he attempted to get Jesus to offer his worship to Satan. God desires our worship, and created mankind as beings in order that we would worship him. Worship matters so much to God. Not only do religious denominations worship differently, but ethnic groups within denominations also have differences with how worship is carried out. There are principles that should guide every expression of worship, and our text book entitled “The Africana Worship Book” offers an array of helps in establishing and setting of worship for the church and its congregants.
