The nature of the problem started with that brawl mainly. David Leonard’s thesis in After Artest includes a three-step plan on how the racial landscape of the NBA changed after the incident, to address how anti-black race, colorblindness, and white racial frames showed policy shifts in the NBA. Also in the book, Leonard talks about how NBA commissioner David Sterns focus was to make the league more diverse therefore adding a lot of players internationally playing for the NBA now. Overall the main point that Leonard tries to get across in After Artest is the fact that the reaction of the NBA due to the Palace Brawl reinforces that blacks are just used for entertainment and that they’re still controlled based on the things that occurred right after the brawl and how the league changed throughout the years after the incident that occurred with Ron Artest. It shows how prevalent racism still is in today’s America but just takes on a different
