There are many altercations throughout history that can change people’s sociological interactions with others in this world. The main purpose of this paper is to show the three unusual ways the NBA changed after the altercation involving several players and fans getting in a brawl and causing much attention that bought up a sociological issue. The title of the book is called After Artest The NBA and The Assault On Blackness. Author David J. Leonard addresses the problem of the famous Palace Brawl that occurred when the Indiana Pacers played the Detroit Pistons on November 19th, 2004 in the home arena for the Pistons.
The nature of the problem started with that brawl mainly. David Leonard’s thesis in After Artest includes a three-step plan on how the racial landscape of the NBA changed after the incident, to address how anti-black race, colorblindness, and white racial frames showed policy shifts in the NBA. In addition, Leonard adds to his thesis with the third step by basically saying that the post brawl NBA adapted by placing more security on the players and the fans so nothing could ever happen but in a way where it is …show more content…
Also in the book, Leonard talks about how NBA commissioner David Sterns focus was to make the league more diverse therefore adding a lot of players internationally playing for the NBA now. Overall the main point that Leonard tries to get across in After Artest is the fact that the reaction of the NBA due to the Palace Brawl reinforces that blacks are just used for entertainment and that they’re still controlled based on the things that occurred right after the brawl and how the league changed throughout the years after the incident that occurred with Ron Artest.
