Broker or Broke There are many jobs and professions out there that I could have pursued, but I chose Ag real Estate. I interviewed my dad, who currently works as a self-employed broker around the front range of Colorado. There is a lot that plays into being a real estate broker and being self-employed, but one thing stood out to me when interviewing with my father. Working as a self-employed real estate broker requires great motivation and discipline.
What is an Ag real estate broker? A real estate broker sells, for commission, real estate or land owned by others to clients. He and his wife raise a family of six children. My dad, has had a long journey to becoming self-employed. After he graduated from Colorado State University, with a major in Agricultural Economics, he started off working for Ag Credit. Here, he worked as a loan officer. Ag credit was an important part of his journey because while loaning money to many different people in the Ag business world for a number of years, he built a network. He created a solid foundation of connections, including farmers, ranchers, dairymen, and others. These connections would be important in the future because many of them would be his clients. He worked at Ag credit for seven years until he decided it was time to move on. From here he moved to Ohr Land, a company that did land development for homes, and other business. Here he learned more about the rules and regulations of real estate. This knowledge was important because if he ever wanted to break off be self-employed, he would need to know the rules and regulations when writing contracts. After about 5 years, he moved to Ag Pro Land Pro, which was a company that did Ag real estate transactions and other services. After a number of years working on the Land Pro side of the company, my dad finally seized the opportunity to break off and start his own business. He kept the name Land Pro, and changed the logo.
