Defined by the Civics in Action textbook, common good is “the well-being of people in a community or society in terms of justice, fairness, prosperity, and respect for human rights and the environment”. The issue of whether Canada is allowing enough immigrants to enter on an annual basis to combat its ageing population will be explored in this essay. Accepting enough immigrants to combat the ageing population would clearly benefit the common good because if Canada were to fail at this, taxes would rise, the retirees would be left with little to no pension and very little support from the government on many matters including health care. Firstly, the issue of whether Canada is allowing enough immigrants to enter on an annual basis to combat its ageing population is definitely directly related to the common good due to the fact that this issue interferes with the well being of a society. If we bring in too many or too little immigrants Canada could collapse. Canada clearly has an ageing population so it is essential that they find young enough immigrants to take the place of ageing working citizens. This interferes with the well being of people because if this were not to happen and any action was not to happen then Canada’s economy would crash. It would crash because there would not be enough people in the working age to pay enough taxes to cover the retired class’ pensions and health care costs. The well being of almost everyone would be tampered with. The seniors would be jeopardized by not receiving enough money to cover their basic needs, the working age citizens would be put at risk by having to pay an absurd amount of taxes, and finally the future generation would be at risk because the working age citizens would not have a lot of children if they can barely support themselves with the high tax. Secondly, by addressing the issue of whether Canada is allowing enough immigrants to enter on an annual basis to combat its ageing population is related to the common good because it directly relates to fairness of people. This is because it will be unfair for the working citizens to be forced to pay a large percentage more tax than the previous generation.
