Work of a Privileged Artist or an Empathetic Survivor Recently, a man was exiled from his home and went on to aware others of the trials and corruption in his home country. This man became a conceptual artist and is known today as Ai Weiwei. His political based art is considered to be ambitious, humane, and often times shocking. He uses his art to ridicule the authorities who beat and jailed him and more importantly the government that provides little to no free speech, China. However, in recent years, Ai Weiwei used his efforts to bring to light the crisis of desolation and desperation occurring around the world. I was intrigued by this event and researched beforehand some information about Ai Weiwei and his film. I was interested by this event because of how profound this international problem was shown by Ai Weiwei. We had talked about this political artist in Shaping last year and briefly in Euro this year. Both times we discussed this man, I became more and more interested by his artwork and when it was announced that TJ would be hosting a viewing of his movie I was excited to go. The first thing I noticed when the film began was the non- traditional nature of it- how it was more pictures and short clips then a narrator talking. I felt like I got more out of this film because of these non- traditional approach because instead of someone telling us how to feel, we as individuals got to form our own opinions on these matters and how we felt about this crisis worldwide. I would have asked Ai Weiwei what he thought specifically we should do as individuals and as a community to combat this international issue. However, I was not aware of how widespread this issue is from North America to the Middle East. In addition, I did not realize how far people were willing to go to escape the horrors of war, government, or famine. People risking their lives to cross treacherous waters or paying someone off to smuggle them across borders, it’s scary that this is happening all around us. And yet, we are blind to it. It is not covered in our news and I feel Ai Weiwei was trying to touch on this fact of how we are basically in a bubble and we only see what the news covers. We have all these different news stations and we hardly ever here about the migrants overseas. I was not aware of how sheltered my life as been before “Human Flow”; however, I hope that since viewing this, I will be able to become more aware and ready to help however I
