In the earlier years, Air Defense Artillery (ADA) was known as Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA), which played many roles during the Korean War, to included air defense measures and ground defense support measures. Although, ADA severed with a primary objective to defend the air from enemy aerial attacks, they also served as supporting ground troops during the Korean war. The use of multiple weapon systems to include: M19 Gun Motor Carriage, M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage and the M45 Browning .50 caliber Quadmount turret. With only a few operations consisting of actual ADA/AAA defense measures, that allowed the Korean War to shift in the US and South Koreas favor.

This weapons system had quad M2 Browning .50 caliber machine guns mounted in the M45 Quadmount, and could fire 1800-2400 rounds per minute, and was given the nickname the ‘Meat Chopper” for its effectiveness against low-flying aircraft and infantry, making it extremely popular with soldiers. The 50th AAA Automatic Weapons Battalion (SP), in support of the Seventh Division had experienced three days of intense fighting with the 31st Infantry in the Angyank-Ri area of Korea. They accompanied tanks and infantry in attacks against roadblocks and enemy pockets of resistance which were well supported by automatic weapons and light artillery. Battery B alone fired 125,000 rounds of .50 caliber ammunition and 2,400 rounds of 40mm ammunition. The M19 Multiple Gun M40mm weapons were put to good use as indirect fires eliminating defensive positions upon adjacent hills. In one battle alone, the 40mm fire was so intense and fast that the defenders of the hill were killed before they could flee from their weapons.
