BRIEF HISTORY OF AKHENATON. Akhenaton whose former name was Amenhotep IV was of the 18th dynasty and reigned for 17 years between 1353-1336. He professed himself as "the servant of Aten."He changed his name to A/khenaton through Aten's honour. Queen Nefertiti was his favourite wife and she is often referred to in history as "the most beautiful woman in the world." During his reign,he renounced Egyptian traditional polytheism and replaced it with monotheism or henothenism which was based on the worship of the solar deity represented with sun disk. He relocated the seat of power from Thebes to
El-Armana, a new capital created by him. So sad, his empire began to crumble just before the end of his reign. In art, he ushered in a new style in art known as Armana Art.In fact, it was a court art

A walk in the garden(a sculptural piece carved in limestone) typifies this. In this work,Akhenaton with wife-Nefertiti and their children,are for the first time shown by Thutmose(royal court sculptor) in an intimate setting performing naturalistic activities.His children are shrunken to the background to appear smaller than their parents.Furthermore,he carved Nefertiti's bust which is one of the royal masterpieces of the Armana period.
(6) In architecture,not many of the buildings survived the depredation by the later kings.This was so because Akhenaton reversed the official religion to monotheism (belief in one god -sun diety)was regarded as being an iconoclast. Buildings of the Armana period did not abide by Egyptian conventional building style.It must be known that he built temples such as the Karnak temple in Luxor; Teni-Menu and Rud-menu in El-armana.They all have many small sanctuaries opened to the sun;many altars and no closing door.
