Albinism is one of the more common diseases that can occur in humans. Albinism can be identified in several ways. People with Albinism have a melanin deficiency (Melanin is a brown or black pigment in the skin) in their skin, hair and sometimes in the eyes as well. Albinos normally have blue, hazel or brown eyes. There are also a few symptoms used to identify Albinism. Many people with albinism will have vision problems, white/white blonde hair and also pale skin that is almost white. Due to the lack of melanin in the hair, skin and sometimes eyes, these are some of the symptoms of having Albinism. Albinism is caused in a few ways. First, Albinism can be caused by a mutation of one gene in a group of several genes. It can also be inherited from the parents of an offspring.
Doctors can perform several tests to help diagnose Albinism. For example, a physical exam can be one, description of the pigmentation of the skin, thorough exams of the patients’ eyes and doctors can also compare the pigmentation of the child’s to that of their parents. Albinos have to wear sun-protective clothing when going outside and also have to wear sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 when going outdoors. Albinos also have to wear dark UV-protective sunglasses when outdoors so not to damage their eyesight. Albinism can occur in different ranges. The most common occurrence of getting Albinism is between 1 and 18,000-20,000 people. In different regions however it can occur in 1 in 3,000 people. Albinism is a negative disorder for several reasons. First, it puts a person with Albinism at a higher risk for getting skin cancer. It also prevents most Albinos from getting a driving license because of having (in some cases) 20/200 vision, and in order to get a driving license you have to have 20/40
