The Renaissance was a time of rebirth for Europe after the plague hit, killing nearly 20 million people, along with the feudal system. With job pay high and people flourishing, came a new view of the arts. Artists were hugely supported, and inventions were created including the printing press. Some wide known artist thrived during this time, this included Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Albrecht Durer.
Born in Nuremberg in 1471, Albrecht Durer was 2 of 18 kids of Albrecht and Barbara Thurmer who were from Hungary. His father, Albrecht, was a goldsmith and served Hieronymus Helfer. One well known piece of his was titled “Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse” Albrecht created this piece beginning in 1497 when he was 27, and was created as a woodblock carving. Specifically, the inspiration behind this piece was from the Book of Revelation. The image was taken from St John’s visions. In his woodblock carving, the horseman with the bow represents pestilence, the one with the sword represents war and the one holding the scale represents famine. The final, front rider represents death. Albrecht added lots of emotion and action into this devastating scene.
Another famous piece of Albrecht Durer is “The Knight, Death, and The Devil”This piece was created in 1513. In this piece of engraved copper, we see a knight riding a horse, and the devil behind him. Under the horse's feet, we see a skull, which represents death. Another thing in his piece that shows death is the corpse on the side of the knight who is holding an hourglass to remind us that time on Earth is limited. The knight continues on without looking behind him to see the devil behind him. There is no confirmed meaning of this engraved piece, but historians suspect that it is an ominous
