Raising the prices of alcohol through the increase of excise is one of the most successful and effective way of reducing alcohol consequences as well as excessive drinking. The government has decided to rise 10% of all alcohol taxes, to reduce the number of hospitalizations and death each year in Australia. A research shows that nearly devastating 6000 deaths occur per year. The amount of alcohol misuse will only increase if the government didn’t implement this 10% tax increase. When the law was introduced there was a significant and positive result. The alcohol consumed daily by an individual significantly reduced from 8.1% to 7.2% only in three years. This suggestion and implementation from the government is also targeted to help to reduce the amount of traffic accidents and violence. 1 in 4 Australians were a victim of alcohol-related verbal abuse. 13% were made to feel fearful by someone under the influence of alcohol. 4.5% of Australians aged 14 years or older had been physically abused by someone under the influence of alcohol (Family Peace Foundation, 2017). It is the governments obligation to protect each citizen’s health and well-being. By raising the taxes of alcohol, the number of violence and alcohol abuse will significantly decrease. This proposal is overall effective in reducing the number of accidents from alcohol.
