As George Washington retired, he advised Americans to avoid political parties. While some heeded his warning, others could not contain their political opinions. From these opinions rose two political parties, the Democratic Republicans and the Federalists, with help from counterparts Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson and from newspapers. Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were the leaders of the two political parties. Hamilton led the Federalists and Jefferson led the Democratic Republicans. The two men influenced their followers with many contradicting views on things such as economy. Hamilton strongly believed that America should follow in the footsteps of Britain, and center the economy on manufacturing and trade. Jefferson,
