Alexander Mackenzie was a Scottish explorer. He was born in Stornoway, Scotland in 1764, his mother died when he was young. Alexander's family moved to New York in 1774 because of the American Revolution war. He was sent to his two aunt's in Montreal because his father and uncle went to the King's Royal Regiment of New York as a lieutenants. After he finished school in Montreal, Mackenzie started trading fur and he enjoyed the business. In 1800 Alexander Mackenzie joined the new concern, then it became known as "Alexander Mackenzie & Co. He was offered a partnership in the XY Company if he goes to Saskatchewan River to join the competition of North West Company in fur trading. He is a quick learner his company was merged with the North West Company. People know him because he crossed of what is now Canada to reach the Pacific Ocean in 1793. …show more content…
The next 3 years he went back to Montreal to study some longitude calculations, at that time he hopes he will reaches the Pacific. In October he discovers the Peace River is a river in Canada that there is a rocky mountain of northern British Columbia. He made a detailed map of the Mackenzie's river all the way until Arctic Ocean. Mackenzie was the most adventurous of all the explorers of the Northwest of North America.
Mackenzie learned that the first nation's people understood that the local river flowed to the northwest. He was looking for the Northwest Passage to the Pacific Ocean but he didn't succeed because he found the Arctic Ocean instead in July 14.The River was named Disappointment River because they could not find the Northwest Passage, then it was named Mackenzie's River for his great respect. The river is the largest and longest river in
