The Life of Alexander Selkirk

Alexander Selkirk was born in 1976 and was a Scottish sailor. When Alexander was only nineteen years old her joined a crew ship, so he didn’t get in trouble for indecent behavior in a church. While on the ship he learned how to navigate. He stayed on ship a few years then went back to Scotland where he got in more trouble for fighting with his father and brothers. He was now in trouble with the law again

In 1703 Alexander decided to join privateer ship called the Cinque Ports. In 1704 the ship arrived at an Island called Mas a Tierra. Selkirk argued with Thomas Stradling who was a commanding officer that the ship was no good for the sea and needed to be fixed before going back out to sea. Standling disagreed

The island had goats and lobster’s, wild foods like cabbage and plums from the jungles. Selkirk started to get depressed for a bit but then was okay. After being depressed a few months he decided to hunt for goats.

Learning how to tan from his father Selkirks used that to his advantage and made clothes from the goats skin. Alexander Selkirks was stuck on the island of Mas a Tierra four and a half years. While on the island two ship came but ended up being the Spanish so he hid so he wouldn’t be killed. The Spanish finally gave up and left. After four an a half long years he was rescued by an English ship called the Duke. After being rescued he was able to help the men on the ship by catching goat to restore their health. Selkirk impressed Captain Rogers so the captain made Selkirk the ships second mate.

After being at sea for eight years Selkirks was back to being his old self. He was charged with assault in London in 1713 and kept in confinement for two years. In 1717 he joined the Royal Navy and went back out to sea where he visited Plymouth and married Frances Candis in 1720. Alexander Selkirks got sick in November of 1721 due to yellow fever and died in December 1721 at the age of forty-one and was buried at
