Alice Latimer Moseley is a self-taught folk artist who began her journey as an artist to maintain sanity at the age of 60 while she cared for her mother who was suffering from Alzheimer’s. The only experience in art Miss Alice had before her 60’s was in China painting during her teens. Alice was born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 21, 1909. Her parents were Earl and Mildred Latimer. Alice Moseley studied at the University of Alabama until 1929 when her father died. Alice married Moses and moved to his hometown in Batesville, Mississippi. Batesville is the place that is captured in many of Alice’s paintings. Alice gave birth to her son, Tim soon after. The arrival of their son, moved the family to Memphis where Alice earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She eventually earned her Master’s degree at Memphis State University. In the 1960’s, Alice’s Alzheimer’s affiliated mother came to live with her family in Batesville. Alice continued her job as a teacher with her head held high, and she took care of her sick mother at night. To relieve the stress and depression, Alice resorted to painting in which amazing work took place. After the death of her mother, Alice decided to share her talent. Each was inspired by the scenery around her. The blue house in this painting particularly stood out with its bright luminous color. The green trees and colorful leaves indicate autumn, calmness, and the content life of Alice. Walking through the white picket fence is a portrait of Alice Moseley happy as can be, loving life. Like many of her paintings, very detailed color stands out wildly which also shows the happiness the old lady felt in her life. Even through the stress and depression of taking care of her sick mother, Alice found a since of clarity in her art.
