As of this date, Franklin has developed no major health issues. Franklin is the child of Mary S., the homemaker in the family, and Gerald S., an electrical engineer. The family lives in a two-story house in a suburban neighborhood. Mother reports that her son is skilled at artistic pursuits, such as playing the piano, but struggles with more analytical and academic skills, such as limited vocabulary skills. Franklin’s response to the question was “the yellow toy box,” indicating that he has already overcome egocentrism and developed a theory of mind, meaning he understands that some people know things that other people don’t know. Even though he knows and Hattie knows the toy train is in the green toy box, Franklin recognizes that Susie does not have that information when she re-enters the room. Task 2: This task was chosen to test for cognitive challenges with pretend play. Franklin accepted the idea of playing pretend, but offered the idea of pretending to be pirates instead. The interaction between the researcher and the subject involved eight back-and-forth exchanges centered on the pretend play scenario. This demonstrates that Franklin has already learned how to engage in pretend play. Task 3: This task was chosen to test for cognitive challenges in overcoming animism. When asked “How is the chair feeling right now?”, Franklin’s response was “It doesn’t feel anything. However, he did respond correctly when asked to point to the image for “fish” “lamp” or “rock”, the image which was not on the table. Franklin instead pointed to other images: oven, t-shirt, and sink, respectively. This may indicate that Franklin is at the beginning stages of learning symbolism.
