It is not an uncommon to hear the term "hero." Although everyone knows what a hero is, not everybody agrees on what makes a hero. Because there are many ways to classify a hero, there are many types of heroes. This includes super heroes, national heroes, personal heroes, and more. My sister, Alli Ison, is a personal hero to me because of her philantrophic works, magnificent spirit, and humanity. Although she is a seventeen year old girl, she has made a difference in many lives. This makes her a hero.

One quality of a hero is acting through altruistic works. This is reinforced by Mel Robbins, in the article "What makes a hero". She says, "you might think that heroism and courage are complicated matters, but they really aren't. It doesn't come down to training or experience, it just comes down to your heart signaling you to go and help." Robbins brings up a commendable point in this quotation. People might say that being human is a fatal flaw, but even the ancient Greeks think that heroes are human. Scott LaBarge explains in his article "Heroism: Why Heroes are Important" that, "The term 'hero' comes from the ancient Greeks. For them, a hero was a mortal who had done something so far beyond the scope of human experience that he left and immortal memory behind him when he died, and thus received worship like that due the gods." Today, there may not be opportunities to fight beasts, be the first doctor, or fight in the Trojan war, but there are chances to feel for others and possibly save a life. Being human allows for empathy. In the end, the person holding the gun to their head and the person caught in a fire both need saving. A hero has to be human to save them.
