Within his essay, “Should undergraduates specialize,” Allitt focused on the differences between the British higher level educational system and the United States higher level educational system. Allitt began by comparing his college experience at the University of Oxford to the one his daughter is expected to experience at Emory University. “Should undergraduates specialize?” is an argumentative piece mainly centered on the conflicting idea of allowing some undergraduate students in the United States specify and for the entirety of the essay, Allitt brought up a topic and provided couple of arguments which he backed up by providing evidence using various rhetorical devices such as: logos, ethos, pathos and personal anecdotes to convince the primary and secondary audiences that some undergraduate students should be allowed to specify in the United States and for his conclusion, Allitt does state his opinion on the conflicting idea and not the general opinion of everyone else.
