Without this aspect in a society, individuals would be self-centered, and society would not be able to progress. A nation is a nation because of the combined efforts of many different sectors: agricultural, scientific, and industrial. Serving the common good is a remnant of survival and adaptation passed through the evolution of the human species. Without one another, people cannot survive or perform at the best of their abilities. For example, without the workers who pave roads, civilians cannot drive to go to school or work.
