As a child Amelia was never at a loss on what to do. In-deed, she was of most original and creative turn of mind born in Atchison, Kansas July 24, 1898 from an early age she was an action-loving, curious, imaginative, and ever eager to try new things. When she was a little girl she showed a decided inclination of being a trail-blazer in games and occupations and had little interest in the tame pass times that were ladylike. So when she was a child she was a bit of a tomboy. One of Amelia’s memories is when she would go and tend to her sisters garden so she could see if the seeds were sprouting. 22) Amelia’s father was railroad attorney forced by his business to do considerable moving about for this reason he could no establish a fixed home and the girls were sent to their grandparents in Atchison. At the age of ten Amelia saw her first airplane at an Iowa State fair in Des Moines. She gave no more than fleeting attention however being at the moment engrossed in imagining the sensation she must be creating in a new hat trimmed with bright flowers.
