American Culture Argument on Obesity
Obesity continuously is categorized as the top leading public health problem in the modern day United States. States have more than doubled in adults and children since the 1970’s (Food Research and Active Center). Obesity comes with vast amounts of circumstances and situations. This includes the problem of a disorder just to the action of over eating. Obesity, in modern day America, should not be considered a disease because this label contributes to the maintenance of obesity rather the reduction of it. I understand that some individuals have medical and/or genetic issues that interfere with normal body functions that cause them to gain rapid weight. Some circumstances also lead to individuals not being able to lose weight or metabolize well. But with this in mind, you still are labeling individuals based on a broad spectrum and not seeing them as individuals who have individual based needs. Why would doctors label a healthy individual in the same bracket as one that has a genetic disorder? A doctor would not treat the patients on the same level of urgency so we shouldn’t place all these people in the same categorical group. American citizens should be placed and treated with the rights they possess. Integrating obesity as a disease did not allow for the right policies and procedures to be put in place to treat individually, causing a problem as stated with the B.M.I. scale.
All in all, obesity is a real cultural problem in the United States today and has caused many debates over the years. Today, citizens can receive disability wages because of obesity. Disability wages are funded by American taxes. Obesity rates are rising on a day-to-day basis and increasingly many people are affected by this. However, obesity as a whole does not have the right terms to be considered a disease and does not give the American individual the right perspective of it. These conditions can negatively impact an American citizen. Obesity should not be considered a disease in
