Jonestown was one of the largest mass suicides to occur in the United States history, taking nearly a thousand people’s lives. Jim Jones, the religious cult leader whom was responsible for the tragedy, manipulated and convinced his followers to take their own lives due to their utopian-like society deteriorating and cracking under the pressure of government officials investigating the village and the growing number of unfaithful followers wanting to leave the “paradise” they were once happy to be in. This dark and grim side of the People’s Temple was not always like this, but instead it was a joyful evangelistic group that welcomed everyone and anyone that wanted to make a change in their life and to find happiness like the rest of the followers. …show more content…
America at the time was still going along the progressive era where people were feeling left out of society and left in a disillusionment of the realism of America. All these issues were causing a need for unity and a place where the people could feel as peace was attainable in a world that was divided and unfair as America was during the
