American Democracy My Report Card
One of the greatest strengths of the U.S. Constitution is it can be amended. The Constitution is the single most important document in our country. The preambles of the Constitution set in motion the electoral process we use yet today. The founding fathers set a plan in motion to limit the amount of terms that any one person could serve. This was achieved by writings in the Constitution setting term limits on presidents and creating a congress. The founding fathers then created what is known as an electoral college. This was achieved by establishing in the Constitution a compromise between citizens and electoral representatives of the states. The presidential election is held every four years on the Tuesday

Constitution on Dec. 15, 1791. The Bill of Rights is the name given to the first 10 amendments of the Constitution that protect the basic rights of U.S. citizens. These rights include freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and the exercise of religion.. It contains 10 Amendments that are dedicated to protecting the citizenry. The First Amendment guarantees freedom of speech, press, assembly and petition. The Second Amendment provides the right to bear arms, while the Third Amendment protects the citizens' rights to allow or deny the quartering of troops. The Fourth Amendment provides for search and seizure rights and protects citizens from searches without a warrant. The Fifth to 10th Amendments are concerned with the right to due process in court, the right to jury trial and counsel, common law suits, cruel punishments, non-enumerated rights and the rights reserved to people. Even though the government has supreme authority over the states and the states are equal to one another. Alternatively it can mean the government and the states have the same amount of sovereignty. In the latter interpretation, which was prevalent in the United States from the Constitutional Convention up until the 1930s, neither party had the authority to tell the other what to do. It has been stated that the separation of powers was the cornerstone of the American Constitution..But the truth is that is only half of it. We also need federalism. With the separation of powers the national and state governments share the the authority that is derived from the people .A gentle balance is maintained between absolute authority and the extreme of strict state rights. Federalism is the method of government the united states is based on.it allows two or more entities to control the same geographic area with each person being subject to the laws of that city, county, state or our federal government. In a federalist government, the power is divided between the national government and other governmental units.
