Written List of Production Destinations to be Reviewed Throughout the Spring 2015 Semester:
1. Golden Age Musical. 1948. “Kiss Me, Kate”, musical with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The story involves the production of a musical version of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew and the conflict on and off-stage between Fred Graham, the show's director, producer, and star, and his leading lady, his ex-wife Lilli Vanessi. . (Taping of the live production of the musical will be acquired from SUNY New Paltz Library.)
2. Contemporary [1960-1980s]. “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” is a 2007 musical horror film directed by Tim Burton. It is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's Tony Award-winning 1979 musical of the same name and re-tells the Victorian melodramatic tale of Sweeney Todd, an English barber and serial killer who murders his customers with a straight razor and, with the help of his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, processes their corpses into meat pies. 3. [1990s-present]. “Rent” 1996. Rent is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City's East Village in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
