In 1824, James E. Seaver wrote A Narrative of the Life of Mrs. Mary Jemison a story from the view of a little girl whose family settled on the frontier settlements of Pennsylvania. Her story shows us the conflicts between whites and indians during the late 1700’s. It also shows us the inner workings of indian tribes. Thought to always be ruthless and primitive the indians truly are a peaceful people. Although they treat their enemies with no mercy the indians believe it in their version of justice. The Jemison’s, an Irish family who recently moved to america settled on a farm in pennsylvania. Frightened by the rumors of Indian barbarians terrorizing white folk the jemisons just kept on going. The French and Indian war had started and the stories kept coming more frequent. One average day they were startled by the sound of gun shots and when they opened the front door they saw a man laying on the floor shot with his horse next to him. The Indians came and raided the house taking prisoners of everyone except her two brothers who ran away. They took them into the woods killed everyone but mary and a little boy. Once they brought them back mary and the little boy were set up for adoption. Upon being adopted into a tribe Mary was treated just as one of their own. The indians took her in showed her their ways and culture changing her mind on the indians. The Indians showed her that they are naturally kind, tender, and peaceable towards their friends.
