When looking at American Wasteland you find the author start to talk about how he grew up and his family did not waste anything, since his grandparents were from the depression. The book goes on to talk about how we as a society have come to the point that we want to have all of the vegetable and fruits that would have once only been available during their season and are now available all year round.The biggest problem is the amount of waste that is created in the fields to the store and even at home or restaurant. The thing that farmer are having to do is come up with ideas for how to keep the crops that once only came in season once a year to being able to have them to sell all year round and this has caused many problem alone. The other problem is we are at an all time high for people going out to eat rather then staying at home and cooking. So lets take a look at where the author got his start and decided to make a book about of how wasteful we are. When looking at his childhood you find that he states that he never went hungry a day in his life growing up however his parents did not want him to waste the food that they gave him and at the same time wanted him to try foods. One of the other thing that I found interesting about the author is that he said that “ They would put scrapes leftover from dinner in a bing for a pig farmer down the road and it would help feed his pigs(Bloom). This idea that one time we would have a bin outside with scraps that would then have a farmer come and pick them up is a very good idea what …show more content…
At one landfill he walked through”he found a bunch of leafy greens all over and looked so good that it could have been eaten but ended up their due to reason from the factory”(Bloom). When landfills are full they are still a problem due to this thing called methane gas that is given off as the waste decays”the gasses that are given off by landfills, it has been found to hurt people with breathing problems”(Bloom). The other topic that is brought up is that the people who live around the landfill are people who are more to lower class and it causes problem when they have kids with breathing problems and have to go to doctors. When looking at how waste is handled I found a very crazy statement that he made about how it comes from one place to the other” waste can be shipped all over the country like PA has many places of trash come to the states even having trash from Puerto Rico”(Bloom) , I wonder why we spend the money to ship trash from one places to another. The other thing is there are some other places in the world that ship other places trash to them and then they go use the trash as an energy source, Im kind of surprised we have not started to use the technology. The other thing is that the gas given off from landfills is a gas that can be burned, so why do we not collect the gas and use it as energy for ourselves rather then having it go into the air.
