Should you be forced to do something just because you can? People have been able to vote freely since 1965 in the United States. In 1857, the first country, Mexico, made voting mandatory. Currently, the U.S. only has around 60% voter turnout. Countries with compulsory voting have about 72% voter turnout. That difference is from being forced to vote. Instead of forcing people to violate their rights, making voting polls and political news more accessible would increase voter turnout. Voting should not be mandatory in the United States because it will lead to a lot of uninformed votes, discriminate against minorities or those who can’t vote, and weaken our democracy. Throughout life, the thought of facing penalties or consequences has deterred people from doing something wrong. If citizens only vote because they are scared not to, those votes will be inaccurate and that election will become useless. Another crucial reason the United States should not pass a law requiring its citizens to vote is that it would be unfair to those who are unable to access voting polls and news. In Nicki Beaman Griffon’s video “The Fight for the Right to Vote in the United States”, voting discriminates against those living in a rural area or districts without voting polls, people without an address or living in poverty, immigrants and non-citizens, felons or people with a criminal past, people with disabilities, and people in economic situations. Those who might be living paycheck to paycheck will have to decide between their next meal or voting for someone who probably won’t affect their lives personally.
