Raised by his father after his mother abandoned them, Hassan was born a Hazara and grew up as a servant boy for Baba and Amir. He was born with a cleft lip that many Pashtuns - and even his mother - made fun of. His first word was Amir, who he considers to be his friend despite him being a Pashtun and one year his junior.
Due to being a Hazara, Hassan never received a formal education meaning he is illiterate and having to constantly ask Amir to read for him. This shows his interest for words and stories, especially those written by Amir. Hassan and Amir share a bond that was formed by them having been breastfed by the same woman. This bond is what makes Hassan completely loyal to Amir.
