Amish Dental Hygiene Have you ever wondered what an Amish schoolhouse looked like? I had an opportunity to visit an Amish schoolhouse and teach them about dental care. While I was there I learned so much about Amish people and what I thought was common knowledge may not be for them. I assisted Dr. Lerg with his presentation to the students about dental hygiene, I helped the students fill out fun worksheets with activities, and each student got a checkup with Dr. Lerg to see how their teeth were doing. I learned that even though Amish people live among us; they do not always use the resources that are available to them.

I first noticed how quiet the room was because the children were extremely quiet. The schoolhouse had two young, female teachers that greeted us and welcomed us to the schoolhouse. The two teachers were both younger than any teachers I had during my years in school, and they could not of been an older than twenty-one or twenty-two years old. The teachers directed the students to put all of their school work away and to get out their song book. The teachers asked us to sit on a bench positioned behind the students and then asked us if it was alright if they sang a few songs for us. We told the teachers that we would love to hear them sing, so they started singing. It was a wonderful welcoming surprise for us, and all of the children sang beautifully. There was about twenty children in the classroom ranging from first to eighth grade. Inside the schoolhouse the decorations looked similar to the classrooms in the elementary school that I attended. They had multicolored posters with the alphabet written on it in print and in cursive. They also displayed the children’s birthdays on a poster in the back of the classroom. The walls were covered with artwork that the students created throughout the school year. The students each sat at a desk that looked like it was from the 1970’s with the wooden top that opened up into a metal compartment
