The structer of the society was divided into social units based off of such things as, inheritance of social positions of worldly goods which came from their mothers and mother's side of the family and matrilineal descent. According to our text "Among the Tlingit and Haida there were two major subdivisions to one of which every individual was assigned at birth, on the basis of the affiliation of his mother"(Page 109). The such divisions are labeled as "moieties" due to division of national or tribal group. This being said it was compulsory that each person in the Native of the Northwest community marry a person from an opposite division. Marriages always consisted of people from two different clans. Man paid the father an agreed upon amount
