“An Hour with Abuelo” by Judith Ortiz Cortez teaches us about wisdom from experience and how you can learn some very important life lessons if you listen to someone else’s life story and learn from their mistakes so that you don’t make the same ones. In the story Arturo, the narrator, is forced to spend time with his grandfather. His grandfather (we’re going to call him Abuelo) decides to tell Arturo his life story which he is turning into a book Abuelo talks about how he always wanted to be a teacher, but he gave up on the dream after a war because all he had was a high school diploma and you needed a college diploma to become a teacher. “Así es la vida” (Ortiz Cofer 596) is what Abuelo is going to call his book but Arturo disagrees.
