Jonathan Safran Foer, author of “How Not to Be Alone” wrote a powerful essay on how technology has changed society. This writing starts off with background information about the protagonist. This is ideal as it gives the reader an idea of the setting, mood, and theme. This essay demonstrates how technology is becoming an “iDistraction” as shown in the first paragraph. A girl was sitting on a bench crying into her phone, and the protagonist was caught in a situation of whether or not to comfort her or to just go “scrolling through names of ones contact list”. Rhetorical questions were being stated about this girl. The author used several questions in a row, as it is a persuasive technique used to make the readers think about the possible answers.
