In the world of Mango Street, women have limited opportunities (Giles, 73). Esperanza witness the lives of many women that are oppress in different ways. In “Alicia Who Sees Mice,” Esperanza presents the situation of Alicia whose mother died. She is a young lady that works in a factory full time and she studies at night. Besides her difficulties, Alicia manages to also care for her father. She wakes up early in the morning and prepares lunch to her father. Her father oppresses her by telling her that her place is in the kitchen making tortillas not studying. She is college student and constantly strives for a better future.
