Garcia’s notion of ‘violence as part of the becoming’ is a profound contribution to the anthropology of violence because she gives the notion a new meaning. While she does not negate the negative connotation of violence, she asserts that the darkness that emerges from violence is necessary for the process of ‘becoming.’ Garcia’s approach is unique to the anthropology of violence because she addresses the tension that the process of ‘becoming’ entails and gives it a new meaning. While the process of becoming is indeed a destructive process which forces one to confront violence and darkness, it also ignites hope and enables one to create a better future.
