In August 1914, a nine year old boy, Alfie Knight, from Dublin wrote a letter to the Secretary of State, Lord Kitchener, offering to fight and kill Germans and join the Army. Lord Kitchener declined the offer explaining that Alfie was too young to apply, but that did not stop other young boys from signing up illegally.

Children as well as adults were impacted by the mess that war brought. Because children were oblivious to the pain embedded in the war, they radiated with an attitude of interest and excitement. As a result of careless recruitment, underaged boys often lied about their age in order to getting the Army.
