In the media today, people with a disability are recognized as tragic heroes or as medical miracles. They are not often noticed for their intelligence or for their accomplishments. Charles A. Riley II, professor of journalism at Baruch College, wrote “Disability and the Media: Prescriptions for Change” in 2002. He describes how the media is portraying people with a disability as saints, rather than showing their human traits. He points out those celebrities that sustain a disability are seen as an object of pity, depriving them of feeling normal. He was unsuccessful in exposing the extent of the media only looking at people with a disability due to vague language, lack current evidence and lack of pathos
