Stanislaus becomes one of Paul's close friends and his mentor. Stanislaus taught and helped Paul and his friends in the war. Near the end of the story, Stanislaus is hit by shrapnel and was killed by a stray splinter in the back of his head on the way back to camp. When Stanislaus' death caused Paul to eventually become careless about whether or not he survives the war. In the past, there were no centers for veterans who came back from war. They just came home to their family. A lot of veterans suffered from PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) but no one knew what that was back then. Now there are centers that can help vets recover from traumas from war. Without the centers today, a lot of veterans would be suffering from PTSD and maybe hurt others or hurt themselves. When Paul came back home, he was unable to feel at home among his family, mourn his dead comrades, express his feelings about the war, or talk about his experiences. When his close friend died, he didn't care if he was going to live or die in the war. The longer he survived and the more he hated the war, the less certain he is that life will be better for him after it ends. Paul was killed on October 1918 on a very quiet and peaceful day.
