Junot Diaz's writing sample is more effective because he starts off by telling the audience about his and his family's background. He wants the audience to know where he is from, the Dominican Republic and where he and his family are at now, New Jersey. He talks about how his mother saves money for her parents back home this lets the audience know about the responsibilities that families have towards loved ones they leave behind in other countries. He uses slang and more intellectual dialect which tells us the author is educated but also aware of his roots, as well as his audience.
