In the reading, “American Dreams,” by Kevin Jennings, the author conceives the idea of how hard it to be gay. In this reading the author tells us how hard it was for him to accept himself as a gay individual. Jennings states, “ My uncle and cousins joint the Ku Klux Klan, while my father, a fundamentalist minister, used religion to excuse his prejudices- against blacks, against Jews, against Catholics, against Yankees , against Communist and liberals (basically the same thing, as far as he was concerned) , and, of course, against gays” (520). Jennings, describes how when he was little he was surrounded by his family who was prejudiced against everyone who were not White Christians. This made his life very hard to accept himself as a gay individual.
